Fictional Reading helps in Becoming Open-Minded & Enhances Creativity

The University of Toronto conducted a research where readers of fiction and nonfiction stories and essays were studied. The results showed nonfiction readers were more open to ideas. They were more creative and imaginative when it comes to getting things done such as the iDEAL casino project. The reason is simple: fiction is a play of the imagination, and so it open doors to possibilities that can be hard to imagine. When it comes to nonfiction readers, it is either black or white. Meaning that it is all about facts and figures, what happened and what did not. Creative imagination will lack which will lead to difficult decision making in the future.

People who read books lead longer lives

A study conducted in Yale concluded that people who read books for about 30 minutes a day live an additional 23 months as compared to those who don’t read or only read magazines. This research was conducted on 3,635 people who were all older than 50 years of age. The logic behind this result concluded that reading does a lot of positive things on the brain. It creates cognitive engagement which helps in improving thinking skills and concentration. It also increases vocabulary which activates the brain cells keeping it active and alive. In addition to this, it positively impacts empathy, emotional intelligence and improves social perception. The entire package helps people live longer on the planet. 

50 Books a year is doable

Writer Stephanie Huston says that people who say that they don’t have enough time to read is a very lame excuse. She herself used to do that. So she set a target of reading 50 books in a year which is simply one book a week. The way to achieve it is to set the phone down, and flip through pages! Read during commutes, while waiting in line, before going to bed and during meal breaks. She says that she is two weeks into the challenge and already feels positive, energetic and is experiencing more peace. The best outcome? She has learned a lot more than she thought was possible.
